PUBLIC SPEAKING

Arts Integra offers a comprehensive program of individual public speaking for the early beginner through advanced levels focusing on developing confidence in one’s ability to speak well before an audience. Students learn to display leadership skills, allowing them to become an effective public speaker. Participants learn to how to analyze, control and use the physiology of the voice and the fundamentals of vocal production and technique including diaphragmatic breathing, posture, head placement, relaxation, phonation, projection and basic acoustics of the larynx, resonance, pitch, range, vowel formants, registers, diction, enunciation, inflection, tempo of pace, and vocal health to become effective public speakers. An essential element to our pedagogical approach is the examination of self and image projection through the correct application of facial expression, gesture, eye contact, body language, and appropriate dress to set the mood, persuade and better influence perception, captivate and engage attention, entertain, and connect with your audience in a meaningful way. Presentation skills are developed and students become informed and empowered speakers as their strengths and weaknesses and learning styles are revealed. Students master each concept by identifying the specific goals of what they are trying to say to further their communication skills. Arts Integra encourages its students to explore a wide variety of media reinforcing concepts learned in class and encouraging facility with techniques for successful and dynamic speaking. Student are taught how to organize their thoughts, communicate ideas more clearly, establish a rapport with the audience, identify the goals, objectives and purpose of their speech and learn how to match the contents of the speech in order to develop a relationship with their audience by understanding who they are. Students work towards improving impairing accents and speech impediments by learning the symbols, sounds and diction of the International Phonetic Alphabet and their practical application to speech. Participants examine how vowels are formed by the articulators, choose vocabulary effectively, learn to work with notes and speak from an outline, and consistently use the IPA to more effectively communicate text in the English language, thus setting a strong foundation for future development of public speaking skills. Students are given many opportunities to perform throughout the year, and those who have prepared for competitions or examinations may be able to perform in a full-length solo or split recitals.
